United States Oil Refineries by State 35 of the U.S. states have oil refineries located in them although the only oil refinery located in Virginia is shut down. The U.S. has 4 of the world’s largest refineries with one in Port Arthur, Texas, one each in Baytown, TX, Garyville, LA, and Baton Rouge, LA with a refining capacity of 600,000., 572,500., 522,000., and 502,500 Barrels per Day respectively. For some countries, the refinery list is further categorized state-by-state. Seven million people live in the shadows of the nearly 150 oil refineries across the United States. These refineries are located in the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and other U.S. possessions. The Refinery Capacity Report does not contain working and shell storage capacity data. Texas is by far the largest oil-producing state in the United States, with a total production of 1.28 billion barrels in 2018.
