In 2018, U.S. net imports (imports minus exports) of petroleum from foreign countries averaged about 2.34 million barrels per day, equal to about 11% of U.S. petroleum consumption. This was the lowest percentage since 1957. Petroleum includes crude oil and petroleum products. However, over the next twenty to thirty years, America’s overwhelming dependence on oil presents subtler, although no less serious, threats to national security. The U.S. is the largest consumer of oil in the world, burning through 18.83 million barrels per day.
